Term 1
In term 1, students will begin to explore rhythm more in-depth! Students will begin to learn rhythmic notation, perform rhythms and create their own rhythms. In addition, students will begin to read and perform ostinati (short, repeated rhythmic patterns) with their voices and instruments.
Term 3
In term 3, students will learn about the instruments of the orchestra through Sergei Prokofiev's "Peter and the Wolf". Students will learn the story that accompanies the music and examine the instruments that illustrate each character in the story. Students will also continue to develop their skills on mallet instruments and their pitch proficiency with the pitches "sol" and "mi".
Term 4
In term 4, 1st grade students will finish learning their new concepts for the year, which include half notes and the pitch "la". They will do this by singing songs, speaking rhythm syllables, moving to different rhythmic patterns and playing instruments and games.
